Early morning on 08 APR 09, Somali pirates attacked the Maersk Alabama; a US-flagged cargo ship filled with relief supplies for Mombasa, Kenya. She was hijacked approx. 400 miles from Mogadishu. To ensure the safety of his 20-manned crew, Captain Richard Phillips offered himself as a hostage to the pirates, who agreed. Currently, the pirates and Capt. Phillips are adrift in a lifeboat, while the DDG-96 USS Bainbridge (Guided Missile Destroyer) is on station with a team of personnel aboard the Alabama. Two more US warships will be arriving shortly. This is the first attack of this kind in two hundred years.
Apparently the pirates thought they could attack a US ship and actually get away with it. It seems history IS doomed to repeat it self, since last time pirates hijacked a US ship, we quickly and decisively beat them.
Now, it's just a matter of time before the stranded pirates either surrender, or harm Captain Phillips. Either way, they screwed up.
